Why would anyone move from the Caribbean to Maine for work?
As you drive up North on The 201, 30 some-odd miles south of Three Rivers on the left hand side, you’ll drive past Robbins Hill Scenic Area. On my way up to Maine for my first summer of work in May of 2014, I stopped at this lovely lookout to take in the landscape of my new domain. I also had a minor panic attack there.
“What the heck am I getting myself into? Am I ready to live in a place this remote? What kind of craziness is going on up here? Is this really the type of business I want to work for?”
Less than a week after spending 4 years in a city at Providence College, these are the thoughts that occupied my worried mind. This was the road less travelled – a totally new territory for me. I was anxious about the unknown, nervous that I was unprepared for what was ahead, and completely clueless as to what working at Three Rivers would be like.
Fast forward to April 2018 – I made that same stop at Robbins Hill. This time, with much happier thoughts.
I took this picture pre-panic attack at Robbins Hill on May 25, 2014 – just before my first day of work at Three Rivers.
My name is Sean MacCarthy and I am the Marketing Director for Three Rivers Whitewater. My time started here in May of 2014 as one of the marketing interns. I ended up staying with this team until November of 2016. It was at that time that I moved down to the island of Utila, Honduras to work for a SCUBA Diving Resort that was once affiliated with Three Rivers.
Life down in Utila was nothing short of amazing. My life revolved around spending time on the Caribbean and meeting cool people from all over the planet. I became a Divemaster, dove hundreds of times, and swam with some of the sea’s most amazing creatures. So, what would want to make me leave that place?
Well, truth be told, Three Rivers may have been the only place to draw me away from Utila and I think that speaks volumes to how great it is to work here.
I have never worked at a place where co-workers so truthfully call each other family. The Three Rivers Family is not just some contrived corporate atmosphere that you may find at other companies. It is a massive family filled with the most fun/energetic/happy/zany/hard-working/hilarious outdoorsmen and women that you’ll ever meet. It spans decades with people who worked here in the late 90s grooming the river guides of tomorrow in each year’s Guide Training classes. It is constantly growing and changing but one thing remains constant – the fun.
There are a number of reasons I decided to make that drive back up the 201. I missed the river trips and the infectious excitement those rapids bring. I missed the treks to impressive waterfalls and the tranquil sound of a flowing river. I missed the hiking and the fantastic views that await you atop of Maine’s highest peaks. I missed the roaring bonfires and all the drinks shared around them. I missed the Maine Whitewater community and all the shenanigans that come with it. But most importantly I missed the family…the Three Rivers Family.
