We all love Maine snowmobiling! The state is known for its fast, wide and flat trials that can take you anywhere in the state! One thing that not everyone knows, is the amount of hard work and effort that it takes to create this amazing and expansive trail system that we all love.

Every year local snowmobile clubs, like the Coburn Summit Riders organize trail clean up and maintenance weekends to prep the trails for snowfall and the upcoming Maine snowmobile season. Recently a team of volunteers with the Coburn Summit Riders went out and worked on The Forks Snowmobile Trail system over the weekend of October 21-22nd.

What We Did

Divide and concur was the name of the game over the weekend as two teams worked simultaneously to improve two of the most popular trails in the area; ITS 86 and ITS 89. One team worked from Lake Parlin Lodge and focused their efforts South bound on ITS 89 while the other half of the crew left from Inn By The River and worked West along ITS 86 towards Grand Falls.

Throughout the weekend 16 individuals volunteered over 150 hours of their time to better the Maine snowmobile experience in The Forks Area. Chain and Brush saws along with trucks and chains were just some of the tools used to help clear the trails and get things ready for winter.

Here are some of the tasks accomplished during Maine Snowmobile Trail Maintenance Weekend:

  • Clearing of brush to widen and improve trails
  • Painting and maintenance of trial kiosks and signs
  • Removal of fallen trees from the trail
  • Repair and replacement of snowmobile bridges
  • Preparation of common wet areas to limit water holes with stone and/or lumber
  • Removal of trash

The Work’s Not Over Yet

Although Maine Snowmobile Trial Maintenance Weekend has come to an end, does not mean that the work is over. Over the past weeks and during the weeks to come until the snow begins to fall; various members of the Coburn Summit Riders and the local community have and will continue to volunteer their time to improve the already awesome trail system that exists in The Forks, Maine Area.
